Dry bulk freight rates found mixed results last week. Capesize rates were able to increase by 13%, but this was largely due to owners simply idling and taking more of their vessels out of the market. Going forward, average capesize rates are likely to range between roughly $3,000 and $8,000/day. The $3,000/day mark stands as the de-facto level where owners have been taking a very large amount of their vessels out of the chartering market, while the $8,000/day mark currently stands as the level where owners have chosen to return to the market.

Panamax rates have come under renewed pressure due to the extremely large number of panamax vessels that have been delivered this year. In the first seven months of this year, approximately 243 panamax vessels have been delivered. In comparison, approximately 274 panamax vessels were delivered during all of last year.

Elsewhere in the dry bulk market, global spot chartering activity has remained firm. 107 spot trip fixtures came to the market last week, 2 more than the previous week. Last week’s spot fixtures consisted of a very large amount of thermal coal shipments from Indonesia, iron ore shipments from Australia, and shipments of various cargo from the US Gulf.

In China, stockpiles of thermal coal at Qinhuangdao (which is China’s largest coal port) currently stand at approximately 6.3 million tons. This is 300,000 tons (-5%) less than was stockpiled a week ago. With stockpiles declining, Chinese traders have chartered more vessels to import thermal coal cargoes. 9 vessels were chartered to ship thermal coal to China last week, 4 more than the previous week. Going forward, Chinese demand for imported thermal coal cargoes will likely find more support.
