China’s shipbreaking industry into “green time”

2014-08-21

It is generally considered that shipbreaking is an industry with heavy pollution, high labor intensity and bad working conditions. However, Wang Deju, the chairman of Greatwall Shipping Limited holds the view that China's shipbreaking industry has changed and now has entered into “green time”.

First of all, as for hardware equipment, Chinese scrapping yards has fully realized disassembling vessels in shipbreaking dock, instead of dismantling on beach, which provides a solid foundation for pollution control. After ship docking, a fence can be added around to prevent the leftover oil, sewage and pollutants of ship from flowing into river or the sea. Some shipyards can even dismantle hull bottom on dry dock or floating dock after the ship being dismantled in dock to a certain degree. By these means, the level of pollution control has been greatly improved, and pollution can be prevented at the source. Meanwhile, most of scrapping yards have established toxic and harmful substances treatment plants which provide a strong guarantee for yards to deal with toxic and harmful substances, and have entered EU’s designated list of green scrapping shipyards.

Secondly, in terms of software, guided by relevant government departments, as well as based on years of exploration, study and research of scrapping yards, the technique of ship breaking has also achieved striking progress. From ship arriving at harbors, to berthing or unberthing, sundry cleaning, locating toxic and harmful substances and until finishing dismantling the last piece of steel plate, the procedures are scientific and complete and the dismantling processes are recorded relatively unscathed. Therefore, while the dismantling efficiency is greatly improved, the scraping industries are becoming more “green”.

The finally factor is institutional guarantee. The relevant departments of central and local governments have developed a series of rules and regulations to ensure green dismantling. Every scrapping yard is required to have a"green certificates" and to be assessed annually with random inspection.

On the other hand, the recycling use of millions tons of steel scrap dismantled from ships is another factor to making scrapping industry green, which can better resource utilization, promote cost savings and enhance environmental protection.

In conclusion, the awareness that shipbreaking industry, especially Chinese shipbreaking industry is green now should be approved and be valued by the society and the government
