A checklist to improve Thai shipping

2013-07-11

One of Southeast Asia’s best known names in shipping has told SeaShip News today what the Thai government should do to make shipping in the kingdom more competitive internationally.

Khalid Hashim, managing director of Bangkok-based dry bulk owner Precious Shipping, urged the Thai government toratify conventions expeditiously and keep pace with the international community. He also said Thai banks should be encouraged to support the shipping industry.

The government should also immediately review registration and mortgage legislation and remove hurdles to allow lenders more comfort.

Maritime training schools should be encouraged and recognized, Hashim said.

Hashim’s final point on his wish list was to see ownership restriction relaxed.

“Currently you need to have 51% of any Thai flag ship owned by Thai nationals. This rule could be relaxed to allow foreign ownership to increase beyond the 49% current limitation,” Hashim suggested.
