Tokyo-based classification society ClassNK has resumed operations in Iran with the reopening of its Tehran office and agreements with the Iranian Classification Society (ICS) and Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), Ministry of Roads & Urban Development in Iran.

ClassNK originally opened its Tehran office in December 2009 but closed it in 2012.

In light of recent changes in the region, Class NK has decided to reopen the office as of June 15.

ClassNK also signed an agreement with ICS in February this year that sets out a framework for surveys and certifications for NK/ICS dual-classed ships.

A separate agreement with PMO is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, ClassNK said. The agreement is to enable ClassNK to perform statutory surveys and certifications on Iranian-flagged vessels in cooperation with Port & Flag State Control officers.
