IRClass signs MOU with Coast Guard for capturing and maintaining refit and fatigue analysis data for Coast Guard Ships

2017-06-28

Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass), has signed a MOU on 16th June 2017 with the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), for capturing and maintaining refit and fatigue analysis data in respect of Coast Guard Ships. The MOU was signed at the Coast Guard Headquarters at New Delhi, by DIG S Kurian, TM Principal Director Fleet Maintenance, ICG and Cdr KK Dhawan (Retd), Head Defence Division of IRS in the presence of IG TP Sadanandan Dy. Director General (Material & Maintenance), TM of the ICG, and Vice Admiral BS Randhawa (Retd), Principal Defence Advisor, IRS.

The scope of this MOU covers compilation of refit data of Coast Guard ships by IRClass. This will enable the Coast Guard to have access to refit data for all vessels of the Coast Guard, which will provide accurate inputs for assessing the material state of ships and for planning future refits.

Significantly, the MoU also provides for IRClass to conduct Residual Fatigue Life Analysis of ICG ships, through Finite Element (FE) modelling and sea loading analysis. This evaluation will be undertaken on the basis of findings during survey conducted by IRS, after the vessel has been in service for about 12 years. IRClass will compute the residual fatigue life, taking into account structural renewals undertaken from time to time and will be able to recommend what work would require to be undertaken in order to extend the fatigue life of the ship, on a scientific basis.
