According to a report by Xinhua News Agency, Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency said on Tuesday that a ship caught fire that day in the Java Sea, north of Madura Island in East Java Province, killing five people, leaving 41 missing, and rescuing 225 others.

The vessel involved, named *Mutiara Sentosa 2*, was on a route from Surabaya to Makassar at the time of the incident. There were 271 people on board, including 232 passengers and 39 crew members. At the time, the ship was about 19 nautical miles off the coast, and the hull was almost completely engulfed in flames, with some passengers waiting for rescue on the bridge and at the bow.

According to AFP, citing the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency, four other vessels were standing by near the ferry at the time, but they were unable to approach due to the presence of flammable materials on board, which posed a danger. Authorities said the ferry was sailing from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi, and the captain had called the ferry company to report the fire. After that, the Search and Rescue Agency said it lost contact with the captain.

The joint search and rescue team has also dispatched additional vessels and personnel to continue evacuation efforts and the search for the missing. Some passengers jumped into the sea and were later rescued by a nearby vessel. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing, and the cause of the fire remains unclear.
