Iran: Strait of Hormuz Temporarily Closed
In the early hours of the 12th, the Navy of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a statement declaring that it had conducted warning shots against a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. The statement indicated that several vessels had attempted to deviate from approved sailing routes and had disregarded Iranian warnings and reminders, refusing to adjust their course or navigate in accordance with prescribed routes. One vessel, which had deactivated its own systems and endangered maritime navigational safety, was subjected to warning shots and forced to a halt.
The statement further declared that, owing to the unsafe situation "caused by the illegal intervention of foreign forces," the Strait of Hormuz will be temporarily closed until further notice. No vessels are permitted to transit until the United States ends its intervention in the region. Furthermore, should the "aggressors" use this incident as a pretext to take misguided action or launch further attacks against Iran, the Iranian side will respond with even greater intensity and will strike new military bases belonging to the enemy in the region.
On the 11th, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi led a delegation to Muscat, the capital of Oman, for talks with his Omani counterpart, Sayyid Badr. Omani and Iranian officials discussed "mechanisms for the safe passage of vessels," with Oman emphasising its advocacy for "preventing regional tensions from escalating through diplomacy."
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Oman has drafted a proposal to manage vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz via two separately administered lanes. Under this draft agreement, which has yet to be finalised, both lanes would remain open. The southern lane, which traverses Omani territorial waters, would operate under conditions of free navigation as existed prior to the conflict. Vessels transiting the northern lane, which passes through Iranian territorial waters, would require prior authorisation from Iran, but would not be subject to transit fees under the agreement.

US Central Command stated on the 11th that at 7:15 p.m. US Eastern Time that evening, US forces commenced their third wave of strikes against Iran this week. The statement indicated that earlier, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had attacked a Cyprus-flagged containership navigating the Strait of Hormuz. The attack left one crew member missing, caused a fire on board, and resulted in severe damage to the engine room, rendering the vessel unable to continue its voyage.
