Bauxite Boom Sweeps the Globe as Trade More Than Doubles in a Decade

Over the past decade, global seaborne bauxite trade has more than doubled, and 2026 is on track to set another record, driven primarily by massive cargo flows from Guinea to China.

According to analysis data from shipbroker Ursa, global seaborne bauxite loadings climbed from 81.3 million tonnes in 2016 to 247.5 million tonnes last year, hitting an all-time high. In the first seven months of 2026, global seaborne bauxite loadings reached 160.5 million tonnes, up 9.5% year-on-year; July loadings alone rose 20.9% month-on-month to 22.8 million tonnes.

Bauxite now accounts for 4.8% of global dry bulk loadings, compared with just 1.8% in 2016. The trade in this commodity is growing at an annual rate of over 13%, far outpacing the average growth rate of the overall dry bulk market.

China remains the dominant destination for bauxite imports, accounting for nearly 92% of seaborne bauxite cargoes so far this year. China's bauxite import volume has grown from 52.7 million tonnes in 2016 to 218.7 million tonnes in 2025, effectively covering the entire net increase in global bauxite trade over the same period.

On the supply side, Guinea has further consolidated its market dominance. According to statistics, the West African country exported a record 127.4 million tonnes of bauxite in the first seven months of 2026, up 19.2% year-on-year, with July shipments surging 44.3% year-on-year to 17.1 million tonnes. Guinea now supplies nearly four-fifths of the international bauxite market.

The long-haul route from Guinea to China has made bauxite a major source of cargo for large bulk carriers. Since records began in 2013, Capesize bulkers have accounted for 27.7% of cumulative bauxite shipments; Newcastlemaxes follow closely at 18.3%; and Post-Panamaxes rank third at 16.2%. Together, these three vessel types have handled more than 62% of bauxite cargo volumes.

Despite the Guinean government's tightened controls on raw ore exports and its push for domestic miners to increase local refining and processing, the country's bauxite exports continue to grow steadily. Supported by sustained demand from the Chinese market, Guinea's bauxite production in the first quarter of 2026 rose 25% year-on-year.
