2012-06-05

Filed a continued soar with 51.23 million dollars 2012 first quarter net earnings, the Hong Kong based independent container ship owner Seaspan is planning to further expand its fleet with 3 most advanced fuel efficient newbuildings. Gerry Wang, chairman and CEO of Seaspan Corporation announced the order after the release of its shinning Reports Financial Results for the Quarter Ended March 31, 2012.

He underlined, “We remain committed to drawing upon our strong and flexible capital structure to further grow our high-quality fleet in a disciplined manner. In achieving this important goal, we intend to continue to emphasize our SAVER vessel design, which we believe provides customers with improved efficiency and operational savings.”

The 10,000 TEU vessels are said to be built at Seaspan’s long time business partner in China, Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. They will be charted to Hanjin Shipping under a 10 years plus 2 years in option contract after delivery in second half of 2014.

With the acceptance of delivery of two 13,000 TEU mega container vessels from Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries during this quarter, Seaspan has already owned a total fleet of 67 vessels. (As of today, the number is 69 for 2 additional 13,000 TEU deliveries of COSCO Hope and COSCO Fortune in April) Those COSCO Excellence and COSCO Faith will be on charter to Cosco Container Lines under a 12 years term.

Vessel utilization was 99.1% for 1st quarter 2012 compared to 98.9% for the comparable period of the prior year. That figure topped other owners’ due to a decrease in scheduled off-hire.

This beyond estimated result also comes from January’s acquisition of Seaspan Management Services Limited for a more harmonized technical, administrative and strategic expense and process.
