CCS Published Guidelines on Survey and Verification of EEDI of Ships

2013-01-18

IMO held the 62th Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and introduced the Amendments to the annex of the protocol of 1997 to amend the international convention for the prevention of pollution from ships, 1973, as modified by the protocol of 1978 relating thereto (Inclusion of regulations on energy efficiency for ships in MARPOL Annex VI). This amendment officially came into force from 1st January this year. For this reason, China Classification Society (CCS) published the Guidelines on Survey and Verification of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) of ships.

The 63th MEPC adopted the 2012 Guidelines on the method of calculation of the attained energy efficiency design index (EEDI) for new ships and the 2012 Guidelines on survey and certification of the energy efficiency design index (EEDI), to help implement the amendment. During the process of drawing up Guidelines of EEDI, CCS had studied the IMO’s requirements of the whole survey and certification process.

This “Guidelines” can be a reference for validating energy efficiency design index of ships from many sides, such as designing, building and verifying. Meanwhile, the “Guidelines” is mainly applicable to vessels of 400 gross tonnage and above, including bulk carriers, container ships, tankers, ro-ro passenger ships and offshore supply vessels, more than 12 kinds of ships. However, the EEDI of ships which use diesel - electric propulsion, turbine propulsion or hybrid propulsion systems should be specially considered during the survey and verification. Other types of ships excluded from the “Guidelines” will also be considered specially by CCS.
