Navies discuss international shipping protection

The Royal New Zealand Navy's been in discussions with international navies over the protection of \\\\commercial shipping.
Representatives from 12 countries met during the week at Auckland's Devonport Naval Base to discuss sharing protocols, counter piracy operations, developments in technology, and how to facilitate the safe passage of maritime trade.
Royal New Zealand Navy Captain Phil O'Connell says regular monitoring of commercial shipping by naval forces globally has been undertaken for many years to guard against terrorism, sea robbery and piracy.
He says secure commercial shipping is vital for economic growth and global trade.
Captain O'Connell says New Zealand is the guardian for a large area of the Pacific, and it has an important role in monitoring and maintaining sea lines of communication.
