Dual Fuel LNG Vessels Planned for Southern China Rivers

2013-11-05

Five new dual-fuel diesel-liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels designed for service in southern China will provide 20 percent fuel cost savings compared with ships using diesel alone, according to a statement from Guangxi Xijiang Development Investment Group Co. Ltd., which is building the vessels for Guigang Dragon Logistics Co.

The ships, three 5,000 deadweight tonne (dwt) and two 1,600 dwt vessels, will operate on the inland rivers of Guangxi.

“[Parent company] Guangxi Xijiang Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. has been vigorously promoting conversion to dual-fuel propulsion for Guangxi River vessels, in southern China,” the company said.

Plans for the use of LNG ship fuel are growing in China, with LNG bunkering expected to begin along the Yangtze River next year and orders for dual-fuel vessels coming from a number of ship owners.
