China's Jiangsu Hantong Ship Heavy Industry has secured an order for up to eight stainless-steel chemical tankers from compatriot shipowner Sinochem Shipping.

This firm four 38,000dwt chemical tanker order is regarded by the shipbuilder as an opportunity to move into this new high-value market.

Delivery of the newbuildings is scheduled for 2H16 and early 2017 with four options attached. Sources have told IHS Maritime that the owner is paying $53M for each vessel.

This latest order is seen as a continuation of the builder's bid to diversify into new areas that began in January 2014 when it received its first Newcastlemax order from German owner Oldendorff.

This contract involves the provision of two 208,000dwt vessels and two options, with all four ships scheduled for delivery in 2016.
