Coal deliveries to southern China’s economic hub of Guangdong rose 2.6% year on year to 93.77 million mt over January-June, Fenwei Energy reported Monday, citing data released by the National Development and Reform Commission last Friday.

Power generating coal accounted for 60% of the total, or about 56.24 million mt, up 8.4% from the year before, the NDRC said.

More than 94.9% of the total, or 89.02 million mt, arrived by sea, up 5.1% from the year before. Another 2.2 million mt arrived by rail and 0.9 million mt by inland river, down 24.1% and 51.4%, year on year, respectively.

Coal transport by road to the province totaled 1.65 million mt in H1, down 13.2% from the year before.

Around 32.04 million mt of the coal, or 34.2% of the total, was sourced from the international market, up 2% year on year, the NDRC data showed.

Coal stocks in the province stood at a relatively high 15.7 million mt as of July 10, with 6.32 million mt of it at 38 key power plants, enough to meet an average of 19 days of consumption, the NDRC said.
