Singapore records slight increase in August box volumes

The port of Singapore recorded a slight rise in container handling volumes in August compared to a year ago, but volumes dipped from the previous month, according to preliminary estimates from Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Singapore’s August throughput was registered at 2.87m teu, an increase of 1.8% compared to the same period of 2013, according to data from MPA.

But a month-on-month comparison showed August volumes dipped 2.7% compared to 2.95m teu seen in July.

In the first eight months of 2014, Singapore port handled a total throughput of 22.32m teu, up 3.4% from 21.59m teu in the previous corresponding period.

Singapore trailed in second place globally behind leader Shanghai which posted a throughput of 23.44m teu in the first eight months of this year.
