Container Safety on IMO’s Agenda

2014-09-24

Over one hundred issues, including container safety, were considered in the course of plenary sessions and working group meetings at the first session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC) held at the Headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) between September 8 and 12.

Other topics on the agenda included the development of the international code of safety for ships using gases or other low flashpoint fuels (IGF Code); drafting the next set of amendments to the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code; the classification of cargoes hazardous to the marine environment; and the development of supplementary material to support the IMO/ILO/UNECE Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units (CTU Code).

The IMO Sub-Committee has confirmed an earlier taken decision on developing the global database for Approved Continuous Examination Programme (ACEP) and establishing a correspondence group for thorough consideration of remaining issues till the next session in 2015.

Moreover, due to entering into force of the amendments to the International Convention on Safe Containers (CSC), the Sub-Committee at its session took notice of the difficulties liable to occur when changing the marking of the existing containers. Marking of the containers designed for the stacking and transverse racking loads less than those specified by ISO standards shall be changed before July 1, 2015.
