2014-10-20

China's Dongying Port has opened two 5,000 tonne and two 20,000 tonne chemical berths, the Shandong Province-based port announced yesterday.

The port now operates 43 berths, and is able to handle 30M tonnes of chemical products per year.

In the first half of this year, Dongying Port has handled a total of 11.6M tonnes of cargo, up by 167% compared with the previous year.

The port's throughput in 2013 was in excess of 10M tonnes, recording a 75% growth each year since 2009, and more than 80% of the cargo was oil and chemical products.

Opened in 1997, Dongying Port is 90nm off Tianjin port and 122nm off Dalian port. It is planned to be developed as a port with throughput of more than 100M tonnes by 2020.

The chemical and oil industries are well developed in the surrounding area of Dongying Port, and include Shengli, China's second-largest oilfield.
