Continuing a slew of casualties at the start of 2015 a Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) boxship ran aground in Tateyama Harbour, Japan, on Sunday.

MOL said the Hong Kong-flagged, 4,600 teu containership MOL Express ran aground in shallow water around 1900 hrs local time on Sunday.

At the time of the incident the vessel was maneuvering into the harbour to undergo engine repairs, having suffered a main engine failure.

“As of 1200 hrs on 12 January, the hull is in a stable condition, no crewmembers have been injured, and no oil leakage has been confirmed,” MOL said.

The 2003-built vessel is owned by Seaspan Corp and Carlyle Group joint venture Greater China Intermodal Investements and on charter to MOL. The vessel is managed by Seaspan. “Currently, in cooperation with the shipowner, we are working to refloat the vessel and restore it to its original condition,” MOL said.
