Germany’s Merkel Denies Greece Could Divide Eurozone

2015-02-05

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday denied that developments in Greece threaten to divide the eurozone’s financially-troubled states and its weaker ones.

“I don’t think the positions of the member states of the eurozone toward Greece differ with regard to substance,” Ms. Merkel said, responding questions on the new Greek government’s ideas for an overhaul of its bailout conditions.

“It’s the moment that Greece must say what exactly its proposals are,” Ms. Merkel said, adding she is “looking forward” to a meeting with the new Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at the European Council meeting next week.

Speaking to reporters in Berlin, she reiterated the German government’s view that it wants Greece to stay in the currency union.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble will meet his Greek counterpart Yanis Varoufakis in Berlin on Thursday.
