Cosco Freighter Arrested in Colombia

2015-03-04

Colombian authorities detained Cosco’s general cargo ship Da Dan Xia at the Port of Cartagena on March 1, on suspicion that the ship was illegally carrying explosives and heavy ammunition, possibly to Cuba, the local daily El Heraldo reports.

The 2009-built, 1,200 TEU ship was detained after the authorities received reports that the ship’s cargo was not properly documented.

The China-flagged freighter was inspected and weaponry was reportedly found in at least seven containers.

The ship was en route from Cartagena to Baranquilla, with Cuba as its final destination.

Colombia’s Ministry of National Defense is in charge of the investigation, and the ship is still detained in Cartagena.

The ship supposedly called at Cartagena to unload a shipment of tubes for an oil company.
