Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) is joining the mega-boxship club ordering six 21,100 teu vessels at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), the largest so far contracted.

The Hong Kong container line is splashing out $951.6m on the vessels, which exceed the capacity of the largest boxships currently on order by 1,000 teu, according to SHI which is quoting the capacity as 21,100 teu. A month earlier Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) ordered 20,100 teu containerships at SHI. Earlier this week CMA CGM announced that it was close to inking an order for three 20,600 teu vessels.

Orient Overseas International Ltd (OOIL), parent of OOCL said it expects to finance 70% of the costs of the vessels.

The 400 m by 58.8 m newbuildings are due to be delivered in 2017.
