Another blow for ICTSI Oregon as Hapag-Lloyd quits Portland terminal

International Container Terminal Services Inc’s (ICTSI) Potland terminal has been dealt another blow as Hapag-Lloyd followed Hanjin Shipping in quitting calling at the port.

ICTSI Oregon said it was “very disappointed” to hear than Hapag-Lloyd was dropping calling at the terminal on its MPS service between the Mediterranean and US West Coast.

The Portland terminal has been hit by nearly three years of industrial action by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). The terminal’s largest customer Hanjin Shipping announced it was pulling out in February.

“Despite these challenges, ICTSI Oregon is committed to this region and will forge ahead to seek new direct container service to Asia and Europe. Retaining and attracting new carriers to Terminal 6 is our highest priority,” ICTSI Oregon said.

The terminal operator, however, admitted attracting new customers would be difficult and called on ILWU to end its action. “For Terminal 6 to be successful, the ILWU must signal to potential container shipping lines that its almost three-year campaign of work stoppages, slowdowns, and safety gimmicks at Terminal 6 has come to an end.”
