Tianjin Port president sacked

Zheng Qingyue, president of Tianjin Port Group, has been sacked by authorities and will be prosecuted for dereliction of duty, three months after the huge chemical blasts at the port’s warehousing area which caused the deaths of 139 people and massive damage to the port area.

Zheng was detained by authorities for investigations in August, along with 11 senior officials at Tianjin Port Group and Tianjin Transport Authority. He claimed before the detention that Tianjin Port didn’t have regulatory function on the handling of hazardous cargoes by non-affiliate companies.

Government investigations found that the Tianjin Port’s management had neglected safety oversight duties, and blamed it for poor regulation of Ruihai International Logistics, which had operated illegally and violated safety rules. Ruihai International Logistics owned the warehouse where the explosions took place, and was found operating without a license.
