Black Sea container terminals of Ukraine, Romania, Russia, and Bulgaria handled 1 723 269 TEU in 9m 2015, including empty containers, excluding transshipment.

This review observes only full containers of the region – 1 213 657 TEU. Total drop suffered by these five countries for the period was 13,35% compared to the same period last year.

The largest increases were in Bulgaria and Romania. After 9m 2015 Ukraine, Russia and Georgia suffered 28,38%, 15,01% and 10,60% drop of laden container turnover respectively.

During this period, 52,77% of full containers handled were imported, with 47,23% of the volume being exported. It is estimated that laden containers share was 70,43% and empty containers share was 29,97%.

Export volumes from the aforementioned countries decreased by 0,53% compared to 9m 2014. The highest export volume drop was shown by Ukraine – 17%. In Georgia, Bulgaria, Russia and Romania there was an increase, moreover Georgia increased its export volume by 35,09%. Imports to the region decreased by 22,31%, mainly because of Ukrainian import volume drop of 38,90%. Import volumes for the period decreased in all countries of the region.

Thus the percentage of laden volume handled by each country in 9m 2015 distributed as follows: Romania – 26,76%, Russia (Black Sea) – 25,67%, Ukraine – 22,05%, Georgia – 16,88%, Bulgaria – 8,64%.

The top-five container terminals of the region in 9m 2015 changed their positions in total volumes handled: DPW (Constanta, Romania) still was on the first place, APMT Poti (Georgia) still was on the second place, NLE (Novorossyisk, Russia) moved from the third to the fourth place, HPC Ukraine (Odessa, Ukraine) moved from the fifth to the third position and NUTEP (Novorossiysk, Russia) moved from the fourth to the fifth place. All of these terminals except DPW (Constanta, Romania) suffered volume drop in 9m 2015 compared to 9m 2014.

As for the leading carriers of the region, there was a new leader – MAERSK overcame MSC, while ARKAS overcame ZIM and became fourth largest carrier of the region: TOP-5 carriers of the region are: MAERSK, MSC, CMA CGM, ARKAS and ZIM. These carriers controlled 74,23% of this market.

Since the middle of 2014 the service of former G6 was re-built (Hapag Lloyd, OOCL, MOL, NYK, HMM, APL). Thus, OOCL moved to ABX service (ZIM) and G6 alliance became G5. In 9m 2014 G5 members controlled 6,21% of total laden container market share, however in 9m 2015 G5 members controlled only 5,75% of total laden container market share. At the same time in 9m 2014 OOCL had 2,25% of market share, but in 9m 2015 its share decreased by 0,36 p.p. and stated 1,88%. In 2015 ABX service was terminated.

In Q1 2015 2M (Maersk and MSC) and Ocean Three (CMA CGM, CSCL, UASC) alliances started their activity in the Black Sea region. In 9m 2014 total market share of Maersk and MSC was 45,35%, but in 9m 2015 it grown by 1,67 p.p. to 47,02%. In 9m 2014 total laden container market share of Ocean Three alliance members was 12,78%, but in 9m 2015 it grown by 0,84 p.p. to 13,62%.
