CSBC to deliver first 14,000 teu boxship in Q1 to Seaspan

2016-01-20

Taiwan’s state-owned shipbuilder CSBC Corp will deliver the first of five 14,000 teu large containerships to shipowner Seaspan by the first quarter of 2016, with the remaining to be handed over by year-end, reports said.

CSBC started work on the first 14,000 teu boxship last year, and work has already commenced on the fifth ship since the fourth quarter of 2015, the local media reported.

The remaining four containerships are scheduled to be delivered to Seaspan in April, July, September and December this year, respectively.

Seaspan has sealed a deal to time charter the containerships to Taiwanese line Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. A further ten 14,000 teu sister ships are built at South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and they will also be chartered to Yang Ming.

Meanwhile, an earlier report mentioned that CSBC may use China’s Yangzijiang Shipbuilding facilities to build certain sections of the 14,000 teu containerships, following a strategic cooperation agreement between the two shipyards.
