2016-02-15

A 13,900 teu APL boxship has been refloated after it was grounded on Bramble Bank in the port of Southampton on 13 February.

The 2013-built, 13,900 teu APL Vanda was involved in a controlled grounding after it lost power according the UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Around midnight the vessel was successfully refloated with the aid of eight tugs.

The vessel was then taken under tow to the port of Southampton.

“At this time no damage or pollution has been reported, the Coastguard continue to monitor the situation,” MCA said.

The grounding was in the same area the car carrier Hoegh Osaka in January 2015. It is also the second large containership to run aground this month following the 19,000 teu CSCL Indian Ocean which grounded on the river Elbe on 3 February while making its way to the port of Hamburg.
