China’s Shanghai handles lower box volumes in January

China’s Shanghai port has recorded a drip in container throughput in January compared to the same month of 2015, according to figures from Shanghai International Port (Group) Co (SIPG).

Last month, the Chinese port moved 2.94m teu of containers, a drop of 7% compared to the throughput of 3.16m teu in the year-ago period, data from SIPG showed.

In 2015, Shanghai port retained its crown as the world’s busiest container port with an annual box volume of 36.54m teu, up 3.5% from 35.29m teu handled in 2014.

Shangahai beat its closest rival Singapore port, which posted volumes of 30.9m teu in 2015, down 8.7% year-on-year.
