China’s Biggest LNG Carrier Hits the Water

China’s biggest liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, which features a length of 290 meters, was launched at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, Shanghai, on April 15.

The vessel, named Pan Asia, will be deployed on a route from Queensland Curtis LNG terminal in Australia to China and will carry some 1.5 million tons of LNG annually once it commences operations in 2017.

The ship, which was ordered in July 2014, was constructed in two years for China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).

Featuring E-2 membrane-type cargo tanks, a width of 45 meters and a depth of 26 meters, the vessel can carry 174,000 m3 of LNG.

The shipyard has three more 174,000 m3 LNG carriers on order. The vessels, worth over USD 1 billion, would be named Pan America, Pan Europe, Pan Africa.
