Terntank’s first 15,000 dwt chemical tanker with dual-fuel two-stroke engine – M/T Ternsund – has completed sea trials and is now ready to be deployed under a time charter with Finnish North European Oil Trade OY (NEOT).

The completion of the sea trials also signifies that the vessel’s engine, with the low-pressure X-DF gas admission technology developed by Winterthur Gas & Engine (WinGD), has passed the final milestone in its evolution from a technical concept to commercial operation as a marine main engine.

The 5-cylinder, 500 millimeters bore, Wärtsilä RT-flex50DF engine employing X-DF technology is installed as the main engine driving a single propeller in the Ternsund.

The engine was run continuously for several days in its gas mode and a series of automated fuel changeovers from diesel mode to gas mode and back. In addition, the engine was run at a range of load points in both gas and diesel mode, including a high load level, AVIC Dingeng Shipbuilding reported.

The Ternsund was undertaken by AVIC International Ship Development (AVIC SHIP), China and completed by AVIC Dingheng Shipbuilding for Terntank. It underwent its sea trials from 22 to 28 May 2016 and is scheduled to be delivered by the end of June.

The Ternsund is the first of four dual-fuel product tankers that Terntank ordered from AVIC Dingheng Shipbuilding. It is 147 meters long and 22 meters wide. The vessel is to operate predominantly in northern European waters, meeting strict SOx limits in sulfur emission control areas (SECAs).

According to Terntank, the Ternsund will be primarily distributing refined oil products from NEOT’s refinery in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The second tanker from the same series, the Ternfjord, will be delivered in August this year, the company said.

The remaining two newbuilds are to be delivered at the end of 2016 and beginning of 2017, respectively.
