Filtersafe Ballast Water System Equipment Used in 15-Vessel Optimarin Order for VARD

Filtersafe, a leading manufacturer of high volume ballast water filtration equipment, is supplying solution provider Optimarin with key elements of its Optimarin Ballast Systems (OBS) which have been selected for use in 15 Topaz vessels being built by VARD in Romania and Vietnam.

Optimarin, a leading global provider of ballast water treatment solutions, has been working with Filtersafe on Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) projects for more than ten years, says Oded Gilboa V.P Marketing & Sales, Filtersafe Ltd. Optimarin uses Filtersafe components as essential parts of its filtration solutions for some of the world’s most hard-working vessels. For the current project, Filtersafe’s 125m3/hour, BS-050 filter is a key element of Optimarin’s ballast water treatment systems.

The BS-050 is a single screen, horizontal configuration filter – a compact design with a very low flush-flow rate. It is easy to maintain and any necessary work can be done by one person using an inspection port. No special tools or lifting of significant weight is involved.

The BS-050 includes a preliminary coarse screen to large solids entering the filtration chamber.

Like all Filtersafe filters, the BS-050 is ‘modular’ by design and can be coupled together, or linked by manifold to enable flexibility in installation and system applications.

Filtersafe’s vertical filters operate in the exact same manner as a horizontally positioned unit and to the same performance standard, whilst substantially reducing the footprint required.

The vessels, VARD 9 21 Design specialist module carriers, will be constructed at two yards in Romania – Vard Braila and Vard Tulcea – and one in Vietnam, Vard Vung Tau, according to Optimarin’s press release.

The UV-based OBS systems will be delivered to the yards between Q4 2016 and Q4 2017. The versatile Topaz vessels, measuring 123m long and 16.5m wide, will boast the capacity to carry high deck loads of up to 1800 tons.

Optimarin’s OBS systems are currently in the final stages of US Coast Guard approval and are fully compliant with International Marine Organization (IMO) requirements. The technology is certified by a comprehensive range of classification organisations, including DNV GL, Lloyd’s, Bureau Veritas, MLIT Japan, and American Bureau of Shipping.

Filtersafe has doubled its manufacturing capacity to meet demand created by the looming introduction of the Ballast Water Convention which requires all ships to treat their ballast water.

The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM), sponsored by the London-based IMO, is aimed at combating marine bio-invasions. It will come into force, meaning treatment will be compulsory; 12 months after 30 member nations, representing 35% of global shipping tonnage, have ratified the Convention.

Under BMW convention rules, all of the approximately 55,000 cargo carriers now afloat will have to meet stringent conditions for the treatment of ballast water. This is being done to reduce the likelihood of damaging bio-invasions which have destroyed fisheries and spread diseases.
