MAERSK, MSC, ARKAS, CMA CGM and COSCO controlled 73,35% of the Black Sea market

Black Sea container terminals of Ukraine, Romania, Russia, and Bulgaria handled 642 308 TEU in Q1 2017, including empty containers, excluding transshipment.

This review observes only full containers of the region – 465 193 TEU. Total growth achieved by these five countries in Q1 2017 was 9,21%, compared to the same period last year.

The laden turnover increase was in all countries of the Black Sea region. In Q1 2017 the highest growth was achieved by Georgia, Russia and Ukraine – 19,72%, 13,63% and 8,07% respectively.

During this period, 53,76% of full containers handled were imported, with 46,24% of the volume being exported. It is estimated that laden container share was 72,43% and empty container share was 27,57%.

Export volumes from the aforementioned countries increased by 6,57% compared to Q1 2016. The highest export volume growth was shown by Georgia – 22,42%. There was a growth of laden export volume in all countries of the region, in Russia and Romania it is stated 10,42% and 7,44% respectively. Imports to the region increased by 11,59%, mainly because of Georgian import volume growth of 19,15%. There was an increase of laden import volume in Russia, Ukraine and Bulgaria – 15,68%, 14,99% and 3,97% respectively, while Romania suffered drop of 2,55%.

Thus the percentage of laden volume handled by each country in Q1 2017 distributed as follows: Ukraine – 27,99%, Russia (Black Sea) – 27,70%, Romania – 23,92%, Georgia – 11,41%, Bulgaria – 8,99%.

The top-five container terminals of the region in Q1 2017 have changed their positions in total volume handled: DPW (Constanta, Romania) still was on the first place, APMT Poti (Georgia) moved from the fourth place to the third, NLE (Novorossyisk, Russia) moved from the second to the fifth place, HPC Ukraine (Odessa, Ukraine) moved from the third to the fourth position and NUTEP (Novorossiysk, Russia) shifted up from the fifth to the second place. All TOP-5 terminals of the Black Sea region except NLE (Novorossiysk, Russia) have achieved volume growth, while the NLE terminal have suffered volume decrease of 13,23%.

As for the leading carriers of the region, MAERSK still was a leader, while ARKAS overcame CMA CGM and became third largest carrier of the region. As a result of a merger between CSCL and COSCO, the united carrier became fifth largest at the Black Sea. TOP-5 carriers of the region were: MAERSK, MSC, ARKAS, CMA CGM and COSCO. These carriers controlled 73,35% of this market.

In Q1 2016 the total market share of Maersk and MSC was 44,94%, but in Q1 2017 it has increased by 0,03 p.p. to 44,97%. At the same time, the total share of CSCL and COSCO was 6,96% in Q1 2016, while in Q1 2017 it has increased by 1,21 p.p. and stated 8,17%. It is also worth to note that in Q1 2017 against Q1 2016 CMA CGM has lost 1,64 p.p. of market share, while ARKAS has increased its share by 0,74 p.p. and it allowed ARKAS to become the third largest carrier in the Black Sea region.
