Recent Trends in Dry Bulk Spot Chartering Activity

Last week’s dry bulk fixtures to be shipped within the next four weeks consisted of a large amount of coal shipments from Indonesia, iron ore shipments from Australia, and shipments of various cargo from the US Gulf.

24 Indonesian coal fixtures came to the market last week, 6 more than the previous week and up from the trailing four week average. The fixtures were made to ship thermal coal to various buyers in Asia. 19 Australian iron ore fixtures came to the market last week, 8 more than the previous week up from the trailing four week average. All of the fixtures were made to ship iron ore to buyers in China. 14 US Gulf fixtures came to the market last week, 7 more than the previous week and on par with the trailing four week average. The fixtures were made to ship a variety of cargo including grain, coal, and petcoke to various buyers in Asia and Europe.

The remainder of last week’s fixtures to be shipped within the next four weeks consisted mostly of shipments of coal shipments from Australia, iron ore shipments from Brazil, grain shipments from South America, and coal shipments from South Africa.

10 Australian coal fixtures came to the market last week, 6 more than the previous week and up from the trailing four week average. The fixtures were made to ship thermal and coking coal to various buyers in Asia. 8 South American grain fixtures came to the market last week, 1 less than the previous week but on par with the trailing four week average. The fixtures were made to ship grain to various buyers in Europe and Asia. 7 Brazilian iron ore fixtures came to the market last week, 2 more than the previous week and on par with the trailing four week average. The fixtures were made to ship iron ore to various buyers in Asia. 5 South African coal fixtures came to the market last week, 3 more than the previous week and on par with the trailing four week average. The fixtures were made to ship thermal coal to various buyers in Asia.

Overall, dry bulk rates were able to remain firm last week as a large amount spot fixtures came to market. Capesize rates are averaging $11,074/day, a decrease of $163 (-1%) from a week ago. Panamax rates are averaging $6,937/day, an increase of $2,168 (45%). Supramax rates are averaging $8,110/day, a decrease of $205 (-2%). Handysize rates are averaging $6,536/day, an increase of $1.
