According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the incident took place at around 10:30 p.m. Singapore local time. The vessel had reported taking on water prior to sinking. Vessel tracking data shows the Jin Xing Yi Hao departed Singapore at around 8:00 p.m. that evening, bound for the nearby Malaysian port of Pasir Gudang on a regional service.

Built in 1995, the 67-meter-long Jin Xing Yi Hao has a deadweight tonnage of 2,444 tonnes, is flagged in Tanzania, and is operated by Pancon Shipping and Marine. According to Indonesian media reports, the vessel was carrying a total of 107 containers at the time of the incident.

The MPA stated it has notified the relevant Indonesian authorities regarding the incident and is monitoring the situation. It has issued a navigational broadcast to passing vessels, advising them to navigate cautiously in the affected area and to report any sightings of drifting containers or debris.

Currently, vessel traffic in the Strait of Malacca and Singapore Strait is unaffected by the sinking. The MPA also noted that no reports of oil pollution have been received in Singapore waters.
