Hong Kong's first batch of fully electric ferries, including the Coral Sea 88, was successfully delivered recently in Nansha. The vessel was constructed under the supervision of VMS, a subsidiary of Wah Kwong Maritime. Representatives from the Hong Kong Marine Department, Environmental Protection Department, and Transport Department, along with partners from CSF, CCS, and WKMS, attended the delivery ceremony to witness this significant milestone in green shipping.

The Coral Sea 88 is one of the first electric ferries fully funded by the Hong Kong SAR Government as part of its efforts to promote green transportation and achieve the carbon reduction targets outlined in the Hong Kong Climate Action Plan 2050. Compared to conventional diesel-powered ferries, this vessel offers significant advantages in terms of zero emissions, low noise, and reduced vibration, contributing to improved air quality and enhanced passenger comfort.

This project represents the first electric ferry newbuilding supervision contract undertaken by WKMS. The successful delivery of Coral Sea 88 has enabled WKMS to accumulate invaluable experience in the field of new energy vessel construction supervision, while also underscoring Wah Kwong's sustained commitment to responding to the global shipping decarbonization trend and advancing the sustainable development of the industry.

The Coral Sea 88 has an overall length of 26 meters and a passenger capacity of 241. Its propulsion system is powered by high-efficiency lithium iron phosphate batteries supplemented by solar photovoltaic panels. A full charge of approximately eight hours is sufficient to meet the vessel's daily operational requirements. The solar panels installed on the compass deck provide clean electricity for all onboard lighting systems.

In terms of enhancing the passenger experience, the vessel has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate the needs of diverse user groups. It is equipped with accessible restrooms, designated wheelchair areas, bicycle parking spaces, bike racks, and luggage racks, providing a convenient and comfortable commuting environment for residents traveling across Victoria Harbour. The Coral Sea 88 is scheduled to officially commence operations in Hong Kong in the second half of 2026, serving the Sai Wan Ho to Kwun Tong route.
