Freights and Spare Container Carriers Keep Increasing

CCFI released by Shanghai Shipping Exchange on March 30 closed at 1135, up by 20.%. Japanese lines closed at 815, increased by 6.7%, and European lines at 989, up by 53.5%.

Supported by adequate cargos, liner companies enhanced freight greatly in April. According to Clarkson’s report in March, some liner operators claimed to restore the lines withdrawn before.

The “bottoming-out” container market re-attracted investors again.

However, in spite of rising freight, the spare transport capacity keeps increasing. Alphaliner’s statistics showed that, up till the middle of March, 302 container ships with a total of 900,000 TEU have been standing idle, amounting to 5.9% of the overall container ships. The number in last June was 53 ships with 80,000 TEU, 0.5% of the total transport capacity.

Freights of middle and small ships bounce back up

BDI closed at 934 on March 30, increased by 24.5% than last month. Thanks to good news of grains, coal and other commodities. Freights of Panamax ships and Handysize carriers keep rebounding.

The market of Capesize keeps going down to seek for support.

Coastal freights leap high and then fall down

CCBFI (China Coastal Bulk Freight Index) closed at 1243, 7.2% more than last month but down by 14% than the same time last year.
