In Guangzhou from Sweden, not only IKEA

2012-07-24

There will be another huge project in Guangzhou after the IKEA store from Sweden. Stena Bulk in partnership with Concordia Maritime has signed a total of 4 newbuilding MR chemical/products tankers contract with 4 further options with Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) last week. This move followed on from last month fresh order signed between Concordia Maritime and Guangzhou Shipyard International for 2 vessels of the same type. Stena Bulk and Concordia Maritime are both members of Dan Sten Olsson lead Sweden’s largest family owned corporate group -- Stena Sphere.

The design of these modern 50,000 dwt vessels has been developed by Stena Weco, Stena Bulk, Concordia Maritime, Stena Teknik and Guangzhou Shipyard International collaboratively. Scheduled for delivery from beginning of spring 2014, these vessels are probably the most innovative Eco tankers existing with completely new hull lines, specially designed propellers and higher fuel efficiency. The price is set to be 40 million USD each. “We believe that the timing, as regards shipbuilding prices, is also right” adds Concordia Maritime’s President Hans Norén. After delivery, they will be joining the fleet of Stena Weco for transportation of refined oils, vegetable oils, palm oils, edible oils and etc.

Flexibility is paramount to be competitive in the tanker segment. To be such a player, ships must be able to carry a wide range of cargoes. And another advantage in the fierce completion will be the ship’s ability to quickly switch between various types and grades of cargoes. “It is with great pleasure we are now getting a new specially designed fleet optimized for our cargo contracts within the Stena Weco Pool” says Erik Hånell, Managing Director of Stena Weco. It is very stimulating that our owners and partners believe in what we have created so far and order these ships that will be commercially managed by Stena Weco, Erik Hånell concluded.

And according to Fairplay, Guangzhou Shipyard International is China\'s most prolific builder of medium-range (27,000-54,999dwt) tankers, having delivered 135 such vessels since 1992.
