Beijing: China’s polar expedition ships might use nuclear power in the future, Du Wenlong, a senior researcher at the People's Liberation Army's Academy of Military Science, told local media.

"Compared with ships that use conventional propulsion, nuclear-powered ships can travel farther and are more reliable, factors that make the ships a reasonable choice for polar expeditionary missions," Du said.

Just this week, the nation’s leading shipbuilding company China Shipbuilding Industry Corp (CSIC) announced that the company had launched the supporting projects for “key technology and safety research of nuclear power ships”.

China is upping its interest in the Arctic as a way to ship goods faster to Europe.
