Taipei: In an embarrassing rap for Taiwan’s top shipping line, Evergreen Marine’s chairman Wang Chung-jinn and the master of one of his ships were handed deferred indictments on Tuesday for sending one of its vessels to a port in China without permission.

Hsu Mu-te captained an Evergreen vessel to a shipyard on Zhoushan Island in China's Zhejiang Province for repair in June last year.

Prosecutors said that both Wang and Hsu were aware that Taiwanese vessels are not allowed to sail to Chinese ports without permission.

The pair admitted to violating the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area and were both given deferred indictments and fined NT$150,000 (US$5,033.4) and NT$100,000, respectively.
