HIT receives temporary injunction to evacuate protesters

2013-04-03

The Hong Kong High Court granted a temporary injunction last night to ban hundreds of protesting port workers from entering Kwai Tsing Container Terminal. The injunction takes immediate effect and lasts until all parties concerned return to court on Friday for a further hearing.

Hutchison International Terminals Limited (HIT) claimed that the situation was out of control and it is losing HK$5m each day the protest continues. HIT also put up notices at the terminal yesterday, telling workers and their supporters to leave and return to work on Tuesday if they wanted to keep their jobs. But the operator took no action once the deadline passed.

Stanley Ho Wai-hong, from the Union of Hong Kong Dockers said the union plans to continue the strike indefinitely. He said it is "completely wrong" to solve the dispute through an injunction.

However, the union and the workers decided to respect the court’s judgment and declared to evacuate the terminal peacefully at 11pm last night, with some protesters still choosing to stay at a demonstration area arranged by the police. The union and workers will meet at noon today to choose a new demonstration site.
