Baltic index slips as rates for bigger vessels remain weak

2013-06-04

The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, fell on Monday, pulled down by panamax and capesize rates.

* The overall index, which factors in the average daily earnings of capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize dry bulk transport vessels, fell 3 points or 0.37 percent to 806 points.

* The Baltic's panamax index fell 9 points or 1.13 percent to 786 points. The index has dropped by about 22 percent in the past one month.

* Average daily earnings for panamaxes, which usually carry 60,000 to 70,000 tonne cargoes of coal or grains, were down $77 to $6,252.

* The capesize index fell 3 points or 0.22 percent to 1,333 points.

* Average daily earnings for capesizes, which typically transport 150,000 tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal, were down $4 to $5,167.

* China's proposal to ban low-grade coal imports would likely have a neutral effect for dry bulk, as softer import levels for low grades will be balanced by imports of higher grades from longer distances, Arctic Securities analyst Erik Nikolai Stavseth said in a note.
