The Coast Guard says a 59-foot fishing boat that ran aground on an island near Anacortes and is now underwater is carrying nearly 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

A salvage company has been hired to remove the fuel.

An air crew from Air Station Port Angeles, Wash., flew over the ship Thursday morning and did not see a sheen or pollution as they did Wednesday night.

The Coast Guard received a mayday call Wednesday afternoon from the vessel Clam Digger, and the only person on board said it was taking on water. The Victoria Clipper ferry was the first vessel on the scene. It picked up the man from a life raft and transferred him to a Coast Guard boat.

The Clam Digger then ran aground on Guemes Island with about three feet of the bow above water.

Video from Chopper 7 later showed the boat was submerged.

The owner has hired Global Diving and Salvage to recover the vessel.

Once rigging is complete, the Clam Digger will be lifted to the waterline, pumped out and towed to dry dock.
