Greece's Piraeus to suspend bunker fuel operations Wed on strike action: sources

2013-11-06

Bunkering activities at the Greek port of Piraeus will be suspended Wednesday, because of a 24-hour strike action called for by labor unions to protest against the new austerity measures and extra taxes, sources said Tuesday.

"Refinery loadings will be suspended, and customs will not issue papers... that will postpone same-day deliveries," a source said.

Bunker fuel deliveries scheduled for November 6 will be deferred to other dates, the same source added.

State-owned Hellenic Petroleum as well as refiner Motor Oil Hellas could not be immediately reached for comment.

"PNO (The Pan-Hellenic Seafarers Union), GSEE (private sector), ADEDY (public sector), schools, hospitals, ships, refineries, banks... everything is going to be in 24-hour strike," another source said.

According to traders based in Piraeus, cruise vessels and passenger ferries will still be able to get fuel supplies on Wednesday as these types of vessels are exempted from the customs.
