Typhoon Haiyan hits Chinese coast with gales, rain

2013-11-12

Six sailors were missing Sunday after their cargo ship sank during Typhoon Haiyan in the South China Sea, officials said

The ship was lost while anchored in the port of Sanya when the gale caused the mooring line to snap, port officials told the Xinhua news agency.

Sanya took a direct hit from Haiyan, the 30th and strongest Typhoon to buffet China this year. The wind and rain knocked out power and toppled tress across the resort city.

Haiyan plowed into China after causing widespread destruction and a high death toll in the Philippines this weekend.

Haiyan was marching toward Ledong Sunday. Hainan Provincial forecasters said the storm would likely produce landslides and flooding.
