30 dry bulk vessels were chartered in the spot iron ore market last week to haul iron ore import cargoes to Chinese buyers. 30 is a very large amount. As we have highlighted in the past, there were only four weeks in 2013 where 30 or more vessels were chartered and only two weeks in 2012. So far this year, though, there have been seven weeks were 30 or more vessels have been chartered to haul iron ore import cargoes to Chinese buyers. Going forward, Brazilian and Australian iron ore production (and shipments) are set to rise even further through the end of this year, and there will be several additional weeks where a very large amount of dry bulk vessels are chartered to haul iron ore import cargoes to Chinese buyers.
