SWS rig awarded national prize

The Chinese government held 'national science technology award' on January 9 and awarded a special prize to deepwater semi-submersible drilling platform ‘HAI YANG SHI YOU 981’.

The platform was constructed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC)-affiliated Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) and designed by the Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC).

Chinese local industry conveyed that it means China's successful advance to offshore facility field as well as Shanghai's development as global offshore facility construction hub.

The China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) implemented a project for HAI YANG SHI YOU 981 to spur oil and gas production in the southern sea of China, satisfy domestic demand and ensure national energy security. SWS became the successful bidder in a tender for the platform in October, 2007 and delivered it in May, 2011.

Approximately 100 Chinese companies have been involved for the project of HAI YANG SHI YOU 981 from R&D to its operation.

Also, the 'research of technology related to 3,000m deepwater semi-submersible drilling platform' and 'technology related to deepwater semi-submersible drilling platform and equipment' have been considered as national issues. Estimated time of the needed for the whole projects turns out to be five years.
