Maersk containership runs aground at Brazilian port

A Maersk Line containership, the 8,402 teu Maersk Saigon, ran aground yesterday afternoon while at the port of Santos in Brazil.

Maersk Line confirmed the grounding to Splash stating: “Maersk Saigon was grounded during her departure manoeuvre at the BTP Terminal in Santos, Brazil. The vessel’s crew is safe and no one was injured.”

The vessel, which is managed by Germany’s E.R. Schiffahrt, was refloated with the assistance of a single tug at 10:30pm. It is currently safely anchored while awaiting further inspection to assess any potential structural damages, Maersk said

Maersk Saigon was operating on the ASAS service and was departing for Port Elizabeth, South Africa when the grounding occurred. Maersk is hopeful the vessel can make up time on its Atlantic transit once it gets the all clear.
