ICS publishes latest Bridge Procedures Guidebook

2016-03-02

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has published the fifth edition of its Bridge Procedures Guide.

Updated from its previous edition in 2007, the new edition has been revised to address the 2010 amendments to the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Convention, as well as the use of new technology such as Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS) and other electronic navigation aids.

The Guide includes emphasis on crew familiarisation with ship-specific navigational arrangements, with various checklists dedicated to ECDIS familiarisation.

“ICS attaches the utmost importance to safe navigation,” ICS secretary general Peter Hinchliffe explained. “The purpose of the Guide has always been to provide clear and accessible guidance on best practice for watchkeeping on the bridge. Rapid technological advances make this an increasingly complex task and the need for strict adherence to procedures that follow established best practice cannot be overstated.”
