Aegean stops operations at Spain’s Algeciras, stays active in local bunker market

Global bunker company Aegean Marine Petroleum discontinued bunkering operations at its Algeciras base in southern Spain a few weeks ago, general manager for Aegean Bunkering Services Nick Hondos said Tuesday.

“We are operating out of Gibraltar and Tangier Med but discontinued Algeciras operations for commercial reasons,” Hondos said, adding that Aegean remains “active in that market”.

“The Gibraltar/Algeciras market is important to us and we remain an active player,” he said.

Hondos added that the company has significant storage capacity at Tangier Med.

Aegean started up operations in Algeciras in November 2013. However, in 2011 it obtained long-term exclusive rights from Horizon Tangiers Terminal to provide retail bunkering services to ships in port and at sea at Tangier Med.

The Gibraltar/Algeciras bunker market is one of the region’s biggest. In 2014, the estimated size of the Gibraltar bunker market stood at around 4 million mt.
