Radio Holland signs strategic alliance

Maritime systems integrator Radio Holland has signed a global reseller agreement with Germany-headquartered Bobz. Together they will offer Bobz’s crew communications solution shipznet as an alternative to satellite communications. This service can be used for inland shipping, in ports and harbours and for coastal operations as shipznet has a range of up to 30km from the coast. It incorporates mobile network technology to allow seafarers to use their own mobile phones when in range of 3G services.

“With the shipznet solution our customers are able to switch from satellite communication to the mobile network,” said Radio Holland business line manager for ship-to-shore communications Armin Holkers. “The main benefits for our customers are the substantially higher speed compared to current satellite communication and the cost savings.”

To use shipznet ship operators need to install an antenna and terminal equipment that can access mobile networks. When a vessel approaches the shore the onboard communication systems would then switch from an L-band or VSAT service to the mobile network. Cost savings come from shipznet’s lower monthly subscription fees. Crew can use shipznet by purchasing vouchers. When the contingent is used up, it can be recharged with the shipping company or the ship’s master.
