ICTSI Manila Getting Ready for Mega Ships

2017-03-07

The Philippines’ Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) is preparing to service the largest containerships in the intra-Asia trade as the facility will expand its capacity with five post-Panamax quay cranes.

To be ordered by International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), the new cranes, capable of servicing up to 13,000-TEU boxships, will have the largest vessel handling capability in the Philippines, according to the company.

Two of the new quay cranes will be deployed at MICT’s berth 5, while the remaining cranes will be deployed at berths 3, 6 and 7, respectively.

The first three cranes are scheduled for delivery by 2018, with the remaining two at 2019. The order also includes 20 rubber tired gantry cranes.

The purchase, along with the construction of another berth, is part of ICTSI’s USD 80 million capital equipment program for the MICT.

The order comes on the back of the terminal’s two-million TEU milestone reached in 2016, which triggered a PHP multi-billion capacity improvement commitment with the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA).

“Hitting the two-million mark last year is a clear indication that we need to further expand our operation in response to the direction of the market,” Christian R. Gonzalez, ICTSI Senior Vice President and Regional Head of Asia Pacific and MICT, said.
